Friday Words of Wisdom from Mom

Independence

Your child's independence comes at an early age. A baby holding his/her neck for the first time can be the start of it. From there our children learn to be independent; by instincts and by observing those around them.

At times parents over function for kids, and kids become trained to ask for help rather than try things themselves. When your child asks for help, if it is a task that you believe they can do on their own, ask them  to try to do it themselves first. If they try, and don't succeed, offer them help. But, teach them how to do the task rather than doing it for them..

As your children grow so does the independence level ,even into young adulthood. At this stage communication is so important. Let them know they can turn to you for an open, nonjudgmental ear; listen to the excitement in their voice as they share new ideas which shape them into responsible young adults.

Let your children know- even though they are independent from you, they can always depend on you.
